Welcome to St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School!
It is my great pleasure to welcome you to St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, a community rooted in faith, flourishing in learning and enriched by a proud heritage. Since opening our doors in September 1955 - continuing the work begun by the Sisters of Mercy at the convent which neighboured the school - our school has been a place where children are nurtured, challenged and inspired.
The legacy of the Sisters of Mercy remains central to who we are today. Their commitment to revealing God’s mercy through service, dignity and education lives on in our mission and can be felt throughout our school—from the statues of Our Lady of Mercy that grace our building and grounds, to the values we strive to embody each day.
At St Joseph’s, our core values - Respect, Integrity, Service and Excellence - guide everything we do. We believe that every child is created in the image of God and deserves to be loved, known and supported to achieve their very best. As a Catholic school, showing love through all our actions is at the centre of our mission, shaping the way we learn, play, collaborate and care for one another.
We are proud of our strong academic outcomes, which exceed national averages and continue to improve year-on-year. These achievements reflect the dedication of our talented staff, the curiosity and enthusiasm of our pupils, and the wonderful partnership we share with parents and our parish community.
Our extensive, beautiful grounds, along with our school swimming pool, provide a unique setting for learning and play. They offer space for exploration, reflection and discovery—supporting children’s wellbeing and enriching their learning experiences across the curriculum.

Sisters of Mercy - the founders of St Joseph's
St Joseph's Primary school was opened in September 1955, taking the place of the private school established by the Sisters of Mercy at their nearby convent.
The first two Headteachers at the school were both religious sisters (Sr Agnes Williams 1955-1966; Sr Veronica Kenny 1966-1994).
We have much to be grateful for to the Sisters of Mercy. Catherine McAuley founded the Sisters of Mercy in 1831 in Dublin, Ireland. McAuley sought, through her service to the poor, sick and uneducated, to reveal the mercy of God in our world. With a particular concern for women, she endeavoured to help them recognise their inherent dignity and become self-directing and self-sustaining. Education was at the heart of this effort, as was a desire to meet needs not being addressed by others.

Perhaps the best known prayer of Catherine McAuley is one she called her Suscipe or Act of Resignation.
My God, I am yours for time and eternity.
Teach me to cast myself entirely
into the arms of your loving Providence
with a lively, unlimited confidence in your compassionate, tender pity.
Grant, O most merciful Redeemer,
That whatever you ordain or permit may be acceptable to me.
Take from my heart all painful anxiety;
let nothing sadden me but sin,
nothing delight me but the hope of coming to the possession of You
my God and my all, in your everlasting kingdom.
